Privacy Policy
Summary: QR code and barcode scanning is processed 100% offline, on your device. We do not collect, store, or transmit any scan data or personal information. Circle to Search is a separate, optional feature — off by default — that requires an internet connection and uses Google Lens and Google Search to return results for content you choose to look up.
1. Introduction
OnScreen QR ("the App") is developed and maintained by ToolBoxesAi ("we", "us", or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how the App handles user data and is designed to comply with Google Play Store requirements and applicable data protection regulations.
By installing and using OnScreen QR, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
2. What Data We Collect
OnScreen QR's core scanning functionality does not collect any data. Specifically, the App does not collect:
- No personal information (name, email, phone number, etc.)
- No usage analytics or behavioral data
- No crash reports or diagnostic telemetry
- No device identifiers or advertising IDs
- No location data
- No cookies or tracking technologies
The one exception is the optional Circle to Search feature, described in Section 3 below. When you choose to enable and use it, the specific content you circle or the text it recognizes is sent to Google to return a result. We do not collect, store, or have access to this data ourselves — see Section 3 for details.
3. Circle to Search (Optional Feature)
Circle to Search is an optional, off-by-default feature you can enable from the App's settings. It lets you circle any area of your screen or select recognized text to look it up online. Unlike QR and barcode scanning, this feature requires an internet connection and is not fully offline.
When you use Circle to Search:
- If you circle an image or visual content, that portion of your screen is sent to Google Lens to identify it.
- The image or text sent to Google is processed ephemerally — used only to service that one request in real time. OnScreen QR does not store, log, or retain this data, and it is never sent to ToolBoxesAi's own servers.
- Once Circle to Search is triggered, your query is subject to Google's own privacy practices for Lens and Search. We encourage you to review Google's Privacy Policy for details on how Google handles this data.
You can enable or disable Circle to Search at any time from the App's settings. When disabled, no screen content or text is ever sent anywhere, and the App requires no internet connection to function.
4. How QR & Barcode Scanning Works
When you tap the floating scan button, OnScreen QR captures a single snapshot of your current screen to detect QR codes and barcodes visible on the display. This process:
- Happens entirely on your device using on-device processing technology
- Is performed in memory only — the screen capture is analyzed and immediately discarded
- Does not save, upload, or transmit any captured screen content
- Does not continuously monitor, record, or watch your screen
- Only activates at the exact moment you tap the scan button
- Never uses the internet, regardless of whether Circle to Search is enabled elsewhere in the App
5. When Not Scanning
OnScreen QR stays completely idle when you are not actively scanning. The floating scan button is displayed as a system overlay but does not observe, record, or analyze any screen content until you explicitly tap it.
6. Scan Safety & Threat Detection
Every scanned code is automatically analyzed for potential threats such as phishing links, suspicious domains, and payment scams. This analysis:
- Runs entirely offline on your device using pattern recognition
- Does not send scanned data to any server or third-party service
- Results are displayed as visual safety indicators (Safe, Caution, Dangerous) directly in the app
7. Scan History
If you enable the "Save scan history" option in settings, your scan results are stored exclusively in a local database on your device. This data:
- Is never synced to any cloud service
- Is never backed up to external servers
- Is never accessible to ToolBoxesAi or any third party
- Can be disabled at any time from the app's settings
8. Batch Scan
Batch Scan allows you to process multiple images for QR codes and barcodes in a single session. When you activate this feature:
- You select a specific folder from your device's storage through the app's built-in file picker
- OnScreen QR reads only the images within that selected folder — it does not access files outside it
- Each image is analyzed on-device, in memory, and discarded immediately after processing
- Detected codes are saved to your local scan history (if history is enabled) and are never transmitted externally
- No image data, file metadata, or folder paths are collected, logged, or shared
Media Access is requested only when you enable Batch Scan mode in settings. Android's permission dialog labels this as "Photos and Videos" access, but the app's custom picker exclusively displays image files. The permission is granted through Android's standard consent flow and can be revoked at any time from your device's Settings > Apps > OnScreen QR > Permissions.
9. Excel Export
OnScreen QR can export your scan history as a structured Excel (.xlsx) file. This export:
- Is generated entirely on your device using local data from your scan history
- Produces a file saved to your device's local storage — it is never uploaded or transmitted
- Can be organized by category (URLs, WiFi, UPI, contacts, etc.) or as a flat list, depending on your preference
- Contains only the data already present in your on-device scan history
10. Permissions
OnScreen QR requests the following permissions, each necessary for core or optional functionality:
- Screen Content Access — Required to detect QR codes and barcodes visible on your screen, and to power Circle to Search if enabled. For scanning, this only activates when you tap the scan button; content is processed in memory and immediately discarded.
- Display Over Other Apps — Required to show the floating scan button overlay so you can trigger a scan from any app.
- Notifications — Required to display scan results and show the active scanner status in the notification shade.
- Vibration — Used for optional haptic feedback when a code is detected. This can be toggled off in settings.
- Media Access (Photos and Videos) — Requested only when you enable Batch Scan mode. Android labels this as "Photos and Videos" access, but OnScreen QR's custom picker displays only image files. This permission grants read access to a selected folder on your device so the app can process multiple images in one session. It is not requested during normal single-scan usage. You can revoke this permission at any time from Android settings without affecting the app's core functionality.
- Internet Permission — Requested and used only when you optionally enable the Circle to Search feature to query Google Lens or Google Search. QR and barcode scanning never uses the internet, and this permission has no effect unless Circle to Search is turned on.
11. Third-Party Services
OnScreen QR does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or crash reporting services, and makes no network requests during normal QR or barcode scanning. The only third-party services the App communicates with are Google Lens and Google Search, and only when you actively use the optional Circle to Search feature. See Section 3 for details on what is sent and when.
12. Children's Privacy
OnScreen QR's core scanning features do not collect any data from any user, including children under the age of 13. Circle to Search, if enabled, sends screen content or text to Google for that single request; the App does not knowingly direct this feature at children, and parents or guardians should supervise use of optional online features accordingly.
13. Data Security
OnScreen QR's core scanning functionality does not collect or transmit any data, so there is no personal data for us to secure externally. When Circle to Search is used, the encircled image or text is queried to Google over an encrypted connection and is not stored by ToolBoxesAi at any point. All processing outside of that optional feature occurs locally on your device using official Android APIs. The App does not use Accessibility Services or any restricted APIs.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect new features or regulatory requirements. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the App constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
